cdc.gov  In Dr. Kami Hoss’ new book “If Your Mouth Could Talk,” he devotes a portion to discussing the importance of good oral hygiene for pregnant women and fertility in general. According to super dentist Dr. Kami Hoss, good oral hygiene is especially important for pregnant women since they have an increased risk for gum disease, which can lead to other health problems. Gum disease is caused by plaque, a sticky film of bacteria that forms on teeth. Plaque can harden into tartar, which is more difficult to remove. If plaque and tartar are not removed, they can irritate the gums and cause them to become inflamed. This condition is called gingivitis. If gingivitis is not treated, it may very well progress to periodontitis, a more serious form of gum disease. Periodontitis can damage the tissues that support the teeth andven lead to tooth loss.
