If you have a high intake of acidic foods and beverages, it’s best to rinse your mouth with water afterward to remove the acid from your teeth. Avoid brushing your teeth immediately after consuming any of them to prevent further erosion and give the teeth enough time to rebuild their mineral content.

Another tip is to increase your saliva flow. Saliva has a natural ability to protect your teeth from acidic attacks, neutralize acid, and repair teeth that have undergone the initial stages of erosion. In addition, drink plenty of water throughout the day and chew sugarless gum to help keep your mouth hydrated, suggests Dr. Kami Hoss.

Keep in mind, too, that stomach acid can also cause dental erosion. If you suffer from gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) or any other condition that causes your stomach acid to come up into your mouth, it is imperative to seek treatment to protect not just your oral health but also your whole wellbeing. GERD can be treated with medications prescribed by your doctor.
