Oral Health for Kids: A Guide for New Parents

Before the first tooth emerges, new parents should start taking care of their child's dental health. Aside from the importance of dental hygiene, the formation of the teeth also affects a child's facial structure and the teeth themselves. Super Dentist Dr. Kami Hoss shares some tips that will surely be helpful for first-time parents.

Find a pediatric dentist.

Dental and oral health starts before the child is born. Consulting a pediatric dentist will educate parents on what they can do to ensure that the child's gums and teeth will be healthy as they grow. This will also prepare parents for what they can expect. In fact, teeth begin to develop during the second trimester of pregnancy. By the time the baby is born, 20 primary teeth are already formed in the jaw.

Start proper dental hygiene.

In his new book If Your Mouth Could Talk, local orthodontist and dentofacial orthopedist Dr. Kami Hoss advises parents to practice proper dental hygiene even before the first tooth appears. When the child reaches three months, parents can start wiping their gums using a soft cloth or gauze to clean the area. This prevents the growth of bacteria while also allowing the baby to recognize that cleaning the teeth will be a part of the daily routine. Once the baby starts teething, Dr. Hoss recommends FDA-approved teething rings that have been refrigerated.

As soon as they turn a year old, parents can take their baby to the dentist. This will allow the dentist to check how the teeth are growing and update the parents on how they must care for their child's teeth.

Set a good example.

Good habits start at home. Infants and children can recognize their parents' routines. While infants and toddlers might need help brushing, parents can already show them the right way to brush their teeth and even floss. When the child can already brush on their own, their parents can teach them the right way. Parents can join their kids and have brushing and flossing time to build a habit.
